Pakistan’s opening pair of Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez scored 126 not out and 96 respectively to dominate New Zealand on the first day of the first Test in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq would have been delighted with his decision to bat first after Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad amassed a 178-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries, before Hafeez was caught and bowled by Corey Anderson.

Hafeez’s brilliant knock of 96 came off 137 balls and included 10 boundaries.

Shehzad and Azhar Ali dominated the rest of the day as they put together an unbeaten 91-run partnership, during which Shehzad registered his third Test century, before stumps was called.

Shehzad finished on 126 off 290 balls, which included 14 boundaries, while Ali remained undefeated on 46 off 114 deliveries, which included three boundaries.

Anderson was the only bowler to take a wicket.

Pakistan ended day one on 269/1 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 06:00 GMT.
