The Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a major blow just prior to the start of the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) as South Africa pace bowler Morne Morkel has been ruled out of the tournament.
It is understood that Morkel has torn the rotator cuff in his right shoulder and will now undergo a rehabilitation programme.
Morkel will be replaced by wicketkeeper-batsman Manvinder Bisla.
The lanky South African is the third overseas player Kolkata have lost after Australia’s Chris Lynn, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery, and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, who has been banned from playing domestic Twenty20 tournaments by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) until the end of 2015.
Kolkata Knight Riders chief executive, Venky Mysore, confirmed that Cricket South Africa have already told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that Morkel will not be available for the CLT20.
“He [Morkel] has had an ongoing problem,” Mysore said. “CSA informed BCCI that the injury was aggravated and was causing challenges with his ability throw. So he needed to be in the rehab for some time.”
