Uncapped Surrey batsman Jason Roy is set to make his international debut after being included in the national team’s squad for the one-off Twenty20 International against India in Edgbaston on September 7.
However, Roy suffered an injury scare during Surrey’s match against New Zealand A when he was hit on the thumb by pace bowler Hamish Bennett.
Despite taking off his right glove immediately, Roy decided to bat on. But, after a few overs, he left the field and was taken to hospital for an X-ray, which showed no evidence of a fracture or break.
Due to this, Roy is expected to be fit enough to make his international debut.
Roy has been in scintillating form throughout this year’s Natwest T20 Blast, scoring 677 runs at an average of 48.35 and an incredible strike-rate of 157.07.
While Roy is the only uncapped player in the squad, England also recalled pace bowler Tim Bresnan, all-rounder Ravi Bopara and batsman James Taylor into the squad.
It has also been announced that Eoin Morgan will captain the team since regular skipper Stuart Broad will undergo knee surgery on September 4.
“This one-off NatWest International T20 provides us with an opportunity to look at players who have impressed recently in domestic cricket and gives them a chance to test themselves on the international stage against high-quality opposition,” national selector James Whitaker said. “I would like to wish Eoin Morgan and his squad all the very best against a strong Indian side.”
