England pace bowler Stuart Broad bulldozed through India with his six-wicket haul to help his team end the day in a dominant position.
However, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni deserves some credit as he kept England at bay for a while with his brilliant knock of 71.
Dhoni was have been regretting his decision to bat first after opening batsman Gautam Gambhir was caught by Joe Root off the bowling of Broad for just four runs.
Murali Vijay failed to trouble the scorers as he was caught by England skipper Alastair Cook at first slip off the bowling of James Anderson.
Anderson struck again just two balls later when Virat Kohli was also caught by Cook at first slip for a duck.
Things went from bad to worse for India when Cheteshwar Pujara was brilliantly caught by Chris Jordan off the bowling of Broad for a duck.
With India in deep trouble at 8/4, Ajinkya Rahane and Dhoni amassed a much-needed 54-run partnership before Rahane was caught by Ian Bell at second slip off the bowling of Jordan for 24.
Ravindra Jadeja failed to have an impact with the bat as he was given out lbw off the bowling of Anderson for a duck.
Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin put together a vital 66-run partnership before Ashwin pulled a delivery from Broad straight to Sam Robson at deep square leg to be dismissed for 40.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar did not manage to score any runs as he was clean bowled by Broad.
Dhoni ended up making 71 off 133 balls, which included 15 boundaries, before he was caught by Jordan at deep backward square leg to give Broad his 12th five-wicket haul.

India were bowled out for a dismal 152 just three balls later when Pankaj Singh was cleaned up by Broad for a duck.
India’s shameful display with the bat was made even worse by the fact that this was the first time in the history of Test cricket that six of their batsmen were dismissed for ducks.
Broad was easily the pick of the bowlers with six wickets, while Anderson snapped up three and Jordan chipped in with one.
Trailing by 152, England got off to a poor start as Robson was clean bowled by Kumar for just six runs.
Cook scored 17 runs before he was caught by Singh at deep backward square leg off the bowling of Varun Aaron.
Gary Ballance and Bell stabilised the innings with a 77-run partnership before Ballance was given out lbw off the bowling of Aaron for 37.
Jordan was sent out as the nightwatchman and faced the next three deliveries without any trouble before stumps was called.
Bell finished on 45 off 56 balls, which included seven boundaries and a six, while Jordan has yet to get off the mark.
Aaron was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Kumar claimed one.
England ended day one on 113/3 and will continue batting tomorrow at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
