Australia all-rounder Steven Smith has revealed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) helped him regain his spot in Australia’s ODI squad.

Smith was recently included in Australia’s squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series with Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Funnily enough, Smith was regarded as a limited overs specialist before he cemented his spot in Australia’s Test squad.

“I think before I came back into the Test squad I was earmarked as a one-day and T20 specialist,” Smith told cricket.com.au. “It’s nice now to be involved in the Test squad and the one-day squad at the moment.

“I’ve got ambitions to play all three forms for Australia. Hopefully my Big Bash from holds me in some good stead to be involved in the T20s as well.

“I guess being exposed to more first-class cricket and playing against good players and learning my art through that. With the one-day format the IPL has been really good for me. It’s a big learning curve. You play so much cricket you get the opportunity to learn from your mistakes quickly – you face the same situations over and over again.

“If you don’t quite succeed one of the times you have another opportunity two days or three days later and you can learn from your mistakes. I think that’s been a big part of my learning curve in the shorter forms.”

Smith added that he sees himself as a finisher in limited overs cricket.

“That is something I like to do, I like to finish off the innings and try and get the team home,” he said. “I think I’ve got better at it over the last couple of years in learning how to pace an innings and be able to lift my gears up when I need to and rein it in a little when I need to too, which the IPL has been really good for that in a learning way.

“I’d been so focused on just playing well in every game I play in, whatever team I’m playing for, whether it be for Australia in Test cricket of New South Wales in first-class cricket, it’s always been about trying to win games for the team that I’m playing for.

“If you do those things at the first-class level and perform consistently your name is always going to be talked about. That’s the most pleasing thing for me that I’ve been able to be so consistent and keep putting the runs on the board and putting pressure on the guys above.”
