Sri Lanka pace maestro Lasith Malinga has decided to represent the Mumbai Indian instead of the Southern Express during the upcoming edition of the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20).
“As per the Team Participation Agreement of CLT20 2014, the decision on which team a player should represent is the sole prerogative of the player himself,” a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) release said. “Accordingly, whilst expressing Sri Lanka Cricket’s preference for Lasith to represent the Southern Express Team, the Executive Committee left this decision at his sole discretion.”
However, Malinga revealed that he negotiated for higher wages for the Southern Express side.
Malinga initially asked SLC to give 50 per cent of the $650,000 they will be making to the Southern Express players. However, this figure was quickly rejected.
In the end, the board agreed to distribute “around 15%” of its after-tax income to the Southern Express players.
