Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has called on the national team to defeat South Africa in the upcoming two-Test series for batsman Mahela Jayawardene.
Mathews’ comments come after Jayawardene announced that he would be retiring from Test cricket following Sri Lanka’s two-Test series against Pakistan at home in August.
“We need a player like him in the team, but he has decided to say goodbye,” Mathews said. “If we can send him off by winning all four Tests it will be great.”
Mathews also conceded that it will be almost impossible to replace Jayawardene, who has been a vital part of Sri Lanka’s middle order since he made his Test debut in 1997.
“He’s been tremendous for us in the past 15 years or so, scoring so many runs,” Mathews said. “His contribution to the team has been unbelievable. So it’s difficult to replace him.
“But that is the challenge we face in the future…new players should accept this challenge and play well.”
