Sri Lanka chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya has denied allegations that he assaulted undergraduate students from Ruhuna University in the city of Matara.

The accusations were brought forth by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna of the Marxist Party.

According to sources, Jayasuriya attacked the students for opposing the government’s plans to hold an annual development exhibition on the university premises.

“I am the area MP,” the former captain said. “I was only participating in a protest organised by the local residents against the university students. I did not attack anyone and was not present at the time of the alleged assault.”
