The Kolkata Knight Riders easily defeated the Kings XI Punjab by 28 runs to become the first Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise to book their spot in the final.

Kolkata opener Robin Uthappa was the standout performer with the bat as he scored 42 runs, while pace bowler Umesh Yadav starred with the ball, taking three crucial wickets to leave Punjab down and out.

Punjab captain George Bailey would have been pleased with his decision to bowl first early on after he took the catch to dismiss Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson for one run.

Uthappa and Manish Pandey made up for the early loss of Gambhir with a 65-run partnership before Uthappa was caught by David Miller at long-off off the bowling of Akshar Patel.

Uthappa’s solid knock of 42 came off 30 balls and included four boundaries and two sixes.

Patel struck again just three balls later when he clean bowled Pandey for 21.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan made 18 runs before he was caught by Miller at long-off off the bowling of Karanveer Singh.

Singh picked up his second wicket off the very next ball when Yusuf Pathan was also caught by Miller.

Following Pathan’s wicket, the heavens parted and the game was delayed for approximately 30 minutes before resuming.

After the short delay, Suryakumar Yadav scored a quickfire 20 before he was cleaned up by Singh.

Ryan ten Doeschate managed to make 17 runs before he was caught by Manan Vohra at deep midwicket off the bowling of Johnson.

West Indies spinner Sunil Narine failed to trouble the scorers as he was run out without facing a single delivery.

Kolkata eventually finished on 163/8 off their 20 overs.

Singh as the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Johnson and Patel chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Chasing 164 to win, Punjab got off to a horrible start when opening batsman Virender Sehwag was caught by Al Hasan at cover off the bowling of Yadav for two runs.

Vohra managed to make 26 runs before he was caught by Yadav at mid-on off the bowling of Morne Morkel.

Glenn Maxwell failed to have an impact with the bat as he was given out lbw off the bowling of Yadav for just six runs.

Wriddhiman Saha was Punjab’s top-scorer with 35 runs before he was caught by Yadav at mid-off off the bowling of Morkel.

Miller only made eight runs before he was clean bowled by Piyush Chawla.

Rishi Dhawan scored 14 runs before he was stumped by Uthappa off the bowling of Al Hasan.

Bailey smashed a rapid 26 before he was caught by Pandey at long-on to become Yadav’s third victim of the match.

Punjab ended up falling short of their target by 28 runs, which gave Kolkata a spot in the final.

Yadav was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Morkel snapped up two and Al Hasan and Chawla claimed one wicket each.

Yadav was named Man of the Match.
