New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum smashed a spectacular half-century and India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets to help the Chennai Super Kings cruise past the Kolkata Knight Riders by 34 runs in Ranchi.

The match was cut down to 17 overs per side due to heavy rain and a wet outfield.

Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni would have been brooding over his decision to bat first early on when opening batsman Dwayne Smith was given out lbw off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan for 16.

McCullum and Suresh Raina made up for the early loss of Smith with a 70-run partnership before Raina was caught by Suryakumar Yadav at long-on off the bowling of Al Hasan for 31.

McCullum went on to score 56 off 40 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes, before he was caught by Yusuf Pathan at deep point off the bowling of Andre Russell.

Chennai eventually finished on 148/3 off their 17 overs thanks to Dhoni’s knock of 22 and Jadeja’s quickfire innings of 17.

Al Hasan was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Russell chipped in with one.

Chasing 149 to win, Kolkata found themselves in deep trouble early on as they lost their top four batsmen for 38 runs.

Yadav failed to have an impact as well as he was given out lbw off the bowling of Jadeja for eight runs.

Robin Uthappa top-scored with 47 off 38 balls, which included five boundaries and a six, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Jadeja.

Russell only made one run before he was clean bowled by Mohit Sharma.

Piyush Chawla also made one run before he was caught by Faf du Plessis at long-off off the bowling of Sharma.

Pathan was the only other batsman to reach double figures as he scored 41 off 29 balls, which included one boundary and four sixes, before he was given out lbw to become Sharma’s third victim of the match.

Kolkata finished on a measly 114 off their 17 overs, leaving them 34 runs short of their target.

Jadeja was the most successful bowler with four wickets, while Sharma snapped up three and Ravichandran Ashwin claimed one.

Jadeja was named Man of the Match.
