The Kolkata Knight Riders have hired renowned explorer Mike Horn for a short stint prior to the start of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Horn climbed the Broad Peak in the Himalayas without the aid of additional oxygen in 2010, he became one of the first men to reach the North Pole without using dogs or any motorised transport in 2006 and circumnavigated the world on foot in 1999.

Horn worked with the Indian national team prior to the 2011 World Cup, which they won, and the South African national team prior to their tour of England in 2012, which they won 2-0 and subsequently became the top Test team in the world.

Horn also worked with the Mumbai Indians before the 2012 IPL season.

“Our objective right now with Mike Horn is that he helps out with the integration of the team, since we have a fairly new team this time,” Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore said. “The team building exercises, team bonding and of course the motivational side of it. Though he is coming for a very short burst, partly because of his availability, we will have him for four-five days leading up to the first game.

“The bigger motivation of getting Mike Horn this season was that he has done a lot of work with athletes in general and sports teams, not just cricket. He is very familiar with this zone. And I also got very good endorsement on him from some of the players. It was very encouraging to look at someone like him for our team.”
