Smith and Powell both scored half-centuries
The West Indies’ opening pair of Dwayne Smith and Kieran Powell both scored half-centuries to help their side cruise to a comfortable four-wicket win over Ireland in the one-off ODI in Jamaica.
Smith and Powell were well supported by the pace duo of Jason Holder and Dwayne Bravo, who is also the West Indies captain, as they took three wickets apiece.
Ireland captain William Porterfield would have been pondering over whether he made the right decision to bat first as opening batsman Paul Stirling was clean bowled by Holder for four runs.
Porterfield himself managed to score 25 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of debutant Miguel Cummins.
Ed Joyce also scored 25 runs before he was caught by Holder at mid-off off the bowling of Bravo.
Niall O’Brien only made 12 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Bravo.
Kevin O’Brien amassed 22 runs before he was caught and bowled by Nikita Miller.
Andrew Poynter failed to have an impact either as he was caught behind off the bowling of Miller for just three runs.
Wicketkeeper Gary Wilson was the standout performer as he scored 62 off 96 balls, which included three boundaries, before he was caught by Kirk Edwards at point off the bowling of Darren Sammy.
Max Sorenson only made one run before he was clean bowled by Holder.
Stuart Thompson was on his way back to the pavilion just two balls later as he was caught by Powell at long-on off the bowling of Holder for 33.
Ireland were bowled out for 202 when George Dockrell was caught and bowled by Bravo for one run.
Holder and Bravo picked up three wickets apiece, while Miller snapped up two and Cummins and Sammy chipped in with one wicket apiece.
Chasing 203 to win, the West Indies got off to a strong start as Smith and Powell amassed a 100-run partnership, during which Smith brought up his half-century, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Thompson.
Smith’s fantastic knock of 55 came off 53 balls and included five boundaries and three sixes.
Edwards only made two runs before he was run out by Dockrell.
Darren Bravo failed to have an impact with the bat as he was caught behind off the bowling of Thompson for one run.
Powell and Dwayne Bravo stabilised the innings with a 52-run partnership, during which Powell registered his half-century, before Bravo was caught by Thompson off the bowling of Sorenson.
Powell ended up making 57 off 80 balls, which included seven boundaries, before he was stumped by Wilson off the bowling of Stirling.
Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin made 15 runs before he was given out lbw off the bowling of Dockrell.
Marlon Samuels and Sammy amassed an unbeaten 15-run partnership to lead the West Indies to victory with more than 13 overs to spare.
Thompson was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Sorenson, Dockrell and Stirling chipped in with one wicket each.
