“It’s our spin department where we’re lacking”
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has announced that the national selectors need to include the spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha in the Test squad.
Ganguly’s comments come after he blamed the spinners for India’s disastrous tour of New Zealand, during which they lost the ODI series 4-0 and the Test series 1-0.
“I don’t think pacers are a reason for India’s defeat,” Ganguly told PTI. “But it’s our spin department where we’re lacking. Dhoni has to think about his spin department. Jadeja has no variation. We also need to bring back Harbhajan Singh. He has good record overseas. Both of them [Harbhajan and Ojha] are a must especially in Test cricket.”
India spinner Ravindra Jadeja failed to have an impact during the Test series as he took three wickets at a dismal average of 85.66, while Ravichandran Ashwin only picked up one wicket during the ODI series at a dreary average of 227.
Ojha’s last Test came against the West Indies in Mumbai in November last year, where he claimed 10 wickets and the Man of the Match award.
“I’m highly surprised at Ojha’s exclusion,” Ganguly said. “He has the ability to take five wickets. If you see his career, he got five wickets in Mumbai on the first day, in the same conditions where Ashwin got three. He has got the variety to take wickets.”
