Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has stepped down as vice-captain in order to focus on his batting, which has not been up to par as of late.

Iqbal informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about his decision through Akram Khan, who is the chairman of the cricket operations committee.

The BCB had appointed Iqbal to the position just four days before the start of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka.

“With such a long season coming up, I think it is in the best interest of the team that I focus on my batting,” Iqbal said. “The role of the vice-captain has certain off-field duties, although it is not that visible on the field.”
