Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 3rd Test Day 2: Mathews and Perera decimate Pakistan

Mathews and Perera made 91 and 95 respectively

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews and debutant Dilruwan Perera decimated Pakistan on the second day of the third Test in Sharjah as they both nearly scored centuries.

Starting out the day on 220/5, Mathews and wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene managed to convert their 54-run partnership into a 73-run partnership before Jayawardene was caught by Junaid Khan at long leg off the bowling of Mohammad Talha for 35.

Mathews and Perera kept the runs flowing with a brilliant 112-run partnership, during which Mathews brought up his half-century, before he was caught by Ahmed Shehzad at deep point off the bowling of Khan.

Mathews’ fantastic knock of 91 came off 256 balls and included five boundaries and a six.

Rangana Herath failed to last very long as he was given out lbw the very next ball.

Perera and Shaminda Eranga stabilised the innings with an outstanding 72-run partnership, during which Perera registered his half-century, before he was caught by Khan off the bowling of Talha.

Perera’s superb knock of 95 came off 247 deliveries and included 12 boundaries and two sixes.

Eranga remained undefeated on 25 off 50 balls, which included two boundaries as Mathews declared on 428/9.

Talha and Khan were the pick of the Pakistani bowlers with three wickets apiece, while Saeed Ajmal snapped up two and Abdur Rehman chipped in with one.

Trailing by 428, Pakistan got off to a cautious start as their opening pair of Shehzad and Khurram Manzoor put together a 19-run partnership before the umpires brought play to an end for the day.

Pakistan ended the day on 19/0 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 06:00 GMT.
