“I’m proud of my involvement with England cricket”

Andy Flower has announced that he will continue on as England’s team director even after they were whitewashed 5-0 in the recently concluded Ashes series.

Flower noted that he intends to oversee England’s rebuilding process and take them to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings again, just like he did in 2011.

“Yes,” Flower said when asked if he would continue on as England’s team director. “You asked for a clear answer, I think yes is a pretty clear answer.”

Flower also admitted that being whitewashed was a bitter pill to swallow.

“Look in sport you win and lose and you have to expect both those things,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of good times. This was not a good time for any of us involved with the England cricket team. I like to feel pride about the way we go about things. I don’t feel pride in the way that we played this Test series.”

When asked why he didn’t choose to resign, Flower said: “I’m proud of my involvement with England cricket and I’m very proud of the results over the how many years we’ve all been working together.

“I think it’s important that we review this logically and learn from some of the mistakes we’ve made and ensure that we get English cricket moving in the right direction again.”

Flower added that he is confident England will regain the Ashes when they face Australia in their own backyard in 2015.

“Well there aren’t many Tests in between now and the next Ashes in 2015, but there is five months between now and the next Test series that England play,” he said. “There’s obviously some one-day and Twenty20 cricket between now and then. We’ve got a little time to think about what we’re going to do with the Test side.

“In the meantime Alastair Cook and Ashley Giles will be busy with their challenges here in Australia.

“There’s certainly time. You can see how quickly things have moved between last summer and now. There is time to get things right yes.”
