“Of course we can do it”

England batsman Jonny Bairstow has announced that there is no doubt in his mind that the national team can still pull off a come-from-behind win against Australia in the fourth Test in Melbourne.

Bairstow’s comments come after Australia only need to score 201 runs over the next two days to go 4-0 up in the series.

“Of course we can do it, you can see that from the first innings where we bowled them out for less than they’re having to chase,” Bairstow told Sky Sports. “Without a doubt I think we can do it. We saw in the first innings with the patience that our bowlers showed and the skills that they showed with the ball when we did get it moving sideways.

“It was a fantastic show of skill from our bowlers that we can hopefully take into tomorrow and we know how dangerous our bowlers can be if we can get it going sideways with either conventional or reverse swing.”

Bairstow also noted that he was disappointed to have been dismissed by Mitchell Johnson after having made a promising start in the second innings.

“That’s the way I like to play my cricket,” he said. “I was pleased to get off to a decent start, I was just disappointed that I didn’t go on.”

Bairstow was also at a loss of words to explain why England’s batting line-up had collapsed on so many occasions during this series.

“If we knew that we would have put our finger on it and moved on,” he said. “It’s obviously disappointing but I’m sure tomorrow we can go out and take those ten wickets like we did in the first innings.”
