“I have to try and make the most of the opportunity”
England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar has announced that the national team have to “put in a very good performance” during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne if they are to have any chance of avoiding a 5-0 series whitewash.
Panesar is likely to become England’s frontline spinner following the retirement of Graeme Swann, who has struggled in the ongoing series.
“We’ve still got two Test matches to show our hunger, our determination, and the style of cricket that we want to play,” Panesar said. “Come Boxing Day we obviously want to put in a very good performance and try to show some fighting character.
“We’re hungry and determined in the dressing-room to make the most of these two Test matches.”
Panesar admitted that he has been handed a golden opportunity to cement his place in the Test squad.
“When these opportunities come my way I’ve got to grab them,” he said. “I know my strengths as a bowler and I have to try and make the most of the opportunity, be ready for it and enjoy it like I do.”
