Abbott took nine wickets on his Test debut

South Africa pace bowler Kyle Abbott has been called up for the second Test against India in Durban as a replacement for fellow seamer Morne Morkel, who is highly likely to miss the match after sustaining a grade one ankle ligament injury.

Abbott has only represented South Africa in one Test match, which came against Pakistan in Centurion in February 2013.

He looked extremely impressive during the match as he picked up nine wickets, including a magnificent 7 for 29 in the first innings.

Following the conclusion of the first Test against India in Johannesburg yesterday, South Africa captain Graeme Smith stated that there will only be a “20% chance” that Morkel will be fit to play in Durban.

“The diagnosis Brendon Jackson, the physio, has given is that he is 20% ready for Durban, which Morne believes is 80%,” Smith said. “At the best of times, he struggles to control those legs. We missed him in our second innings. Let us hold thumbs, but I don’t think the prognosis is great.”
