“We’ve got a great opportunity this week in Melbourne to make sure we put it right”

England batsman Joe Root has announced that the national team have to avenge their Ashes loss by winning the last two Test matches against Australia in Melbourne and Sydney.

England lost the Ashes for the first time in five years after they were completely outplayed in the first three Test matches against their arch-rivals.

“There is a lot of disappointment flying around as you would expect,” Root told Sky Sports News. “We are a proud side.

“But we’ve got a great opportunity this week in Melbourne to make sure we put it right and come out fighting.

“I don’t think getting up for any of the games will be a challenge.

“I think on Boxing Day especially, with the history around it and the venue and amount of people there.

“It will be a fantasatic occasion and we will definitely be up for it first morning for sure.”

Root added that he needs to make larger contributions with the bat after only managing to score 153 runs at an average of 30.60 in the first three Tests.

“I would like to have scored more runs,” he said. “It has not been ideal the way things have panned out. But I’ll be wanting to really contribute in these next two Test matches.”
