Morkel will be out of action for seven to ten days

South Africa pace bowler Morne Morkel will miss the remainder of the ongoing Test match against India in Johannesburg and is likely to miss the second Test in Durban as well after he sustained a grade one ankle ligament injury.

South Africa team manager and doctor Mohammed Moosajee stated that grade one ligament injuries usually take seven to ten days to heal.

The incident occurred in the over before lunch today when Morkel’s foot got stuck in the turf as he was running to pick up the ball at fine leg.

Morkel managed to throw the ball back to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers before collapsing to the ground, clutching his ankle.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith immediately ran to the aid of his fallen compatriot as one of the other fielders called for a stretcher.

However, with the aid of Smith and bowling coach Allan Donald, Morkel was able to leave the field on his own two feet.

Morkel has been taken to the hospital for a scan and South Africa will know more about the severity of his injury once the results are released.

A source within the South African camp has deemed Morkel’s injury as a “mild sprain” for now.
