“I think the mood is very good in the camp and we’re really looking forward to the whole series really”

England batsman Joe Root has announced that the national team are brimming with confidence ahead of the first Ashes Test against arch-rivals Australia on November 21 in Brisbane.

Root’s comments come after England registered a comfortable seven-wicket win over the Cricket Australia Invitational XI in Sydney.

Root was also pleased to have scored 75 during the four-day warm-up game.

“Obviously it’s great to get in a good performance this week,” Root told Sky Sports. “Good to see a lot of the lads put in strong performances and taking a lot of confidence forward to next week.

“Everyone has really contributed and that’s really pleasing. There will be a lot of positives to take forward to next week and hopefully we can take the momentum from this win into that.

“It’s very exciting now, obviously getting the warm-up games out of the way. We’ve prepared very well. We’ve got a very important few days ahead of us. I think the mood is very good in the camp and we’re really looking forward to the whole series really.”

Despite having been dethroned as an opener by Michael Carberry, Root noted that he does not mind batting at number six since he has had a lot of success at that position in the past.

“I’ve just enjoyed playing for England,” he said. “I’ve tried to make the most of my opportunities, score some runs and make sure I’m in good form and that my game’s in good order going into next week.

“The fundamentals are the same. You still prepare pretty similarly apart from you get to sit down and put your feet up for a while before you put your pads on. That’s the only real difference. I’m looking forward to the series.”

The 22-year-old also suffered a nasty blow on the finger during the warm-up game, but he calmed fears, stating that he was fine.

“It’s alright,” he said. “It’s a recurring injury, but I played through it all last summer so everything should be fine going into next week. You get them a lot playing cricket. I just need to be careful with it.”
