Pietersen or Swann should replace Cook as captain immediately, says Shane Warne

Former Australia spin king Shane Warne has announced that England need to replace captain Alastair Cook immediately if they want to become a truly dominant side.

Warne, who recently called Cook’s captaincy style “negative, boring [and] not very imaginative”, suggested that Kevin Pietersen or Graeme Swann should replace the 28-year-old.

“If I had to choose a captain out of the England side it would be Kevin Pietersen or Graeme Swann,” Warne wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph. “That may sound like an unbelievable thing to say after all the controversy of last year, but I think KP has the best cricket brain in the team.

“Graeme Swann is good too, as we have seen from his Twenty20 captaincy of England.

“They are both imaginative, good readers of the game and take the aggressive option first – whereas Cook retreats too quickly.”

Warne’s first real jab at Cook came during the recent Ashes series, where he questioned the England captain’s choice to be “defensive” instead of going on an all-out offensive against Australia when they were 2-0 up.

“People wanted to know why England were not attacking when they were 2-0 up,” Warne said. “England’s default position is to be defensive, because that is the nature of the captain, Alastair Cook.”

Warne noted that this was his own personal opinion and added that he wasn’t getting “paid by Cricket Australia” to voice all these criticisms.

“For your information, I am not paid by Cricket Australia and have no official role with them,” he said. “I honestly believe Cook has to improve tactically if England are to become the number one team in the world again, and I do not think too many people would disagree with me.”
