“We gradually got better throughout the game”

England stand-in captain Matt Prior has revealed that he was pleased with his side’s performance against Western Australia, despite a less than impressive bowling performance and only three batsmen making a major contribution with the bat.

England’s bowlers had to toil and struggle for their wickets, while Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell, both of whom scored brilliant centuries, along with Michael Carberry, who smashed a wonderful 78, were the only three batsmen to show some form.

However, Prior saw things in a very different light.

“We know how important first innings runs are going to be, and that starts with the two men at the top,” Prior said. “The way Carberry played was fantastic, and Rooty as well. Bell and Trott took over from there, so very happy with the batting overall.

“The bowling today went from strength to strength which was a great sign.

“I think we got a huge amount from it. In all departments, we gradually got better throughout the game, certainly in the field, and from a fielding and bowling point of view.”
