Amla is still awaiting the birth of his second child
South Africa batsman Hashim Amla is unlikely to participate in the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan as his wife is still yet to give birth to their second child.
It is understood that Colin Ingram has been put on standby in case Amla is unable to play.
Amla missed the second Test against Pakistan, which South Africa won by an innings and 92 runs, to be by his wife’s side when she gives birth.
Cricket South Africa also revealed that pace spearhead Dale Steyn will be rested for the first two ODIs in order to manage his workload.
Prior to the start of the second Test, Steyn complained of tightness in his right hamstring, but was allowed to play after he passed a fitness test.
Steyn has not represented South Africa in an ODI since the Champions Trophy in June as he succumbed to numerous injuries.
Cricket South Africa have also revealed that former coach Gary Kirsten will join up with the team as a batting consultant for the second and third ODI.
Speaking about Kirsten’s new role, South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee said: “Gary is a world-cup winning coach and it would be naïve of us not to tap into his wisdom. We have a crop of young batsmen in the squad we feel will gain a lot of insight from his vast batting experience and knowledge. We are going into an important phase leading up to the World Cup so it will be important for us to tap into as many resources available to us.”
