“No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself”
Legendary Australia captain and commentator Richie Benaud is in stable condition after his 1963 Sunbeam Alpine “mounted a nature strip and hit a small brick wall”.
Benaud is reported to have suffered a broken sternum, along with chest and shoulder injuries.
“No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself,” Benaud said in a statement.
It is understood that Benaud will remain in hospital for another two weeks.
Benaud’s wife, Daphne, stated that her husband was “looking unbelievably well”.
“Richie’s remarkable,” she said. “At first I was quite concerned but today he’s looking unbelievably well.”
Cricket Australia also wished Benaud a full and speedy recovery.
“We wish cricket legend Richie Benaud a speedy recovery after being involved in a car accident in Sydney,” Cricket Australia said via Twitter.
