Steyn complained of tightness in his hamstring

South Africa’s chances of defeating Pakistan in the second Test in Dubai just got grimmer after pace spearhead Dale Steyn cut his training short on Sunday due to tightness in his right hamstring.

The Proteas may also be without batsman Hashim Amla, who scored a magnificent century in the first Test in Abu Dhabi, as he is currently in South Africa to witness the birth of his second child.

It was confirmed that Amla would be ruled out of the match if he is unable to leave Durban by mid-day tomorrow.

Steyn’s injury was examined by the team’s physiotherapist today, but the full extent of his injury will only be known by tomorrow.

“We should have a better idea of the situation tomorrow,” South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee, who is also a medical doctor, told ESPNcricinfo. “We need a 24-hour period before we can determine exactly what’s wrong.”

South Africa vice-captain AB de Villiers noted that Steyn missed the rest of the training session as a precaution and added that everyone in the team is hoping for the best.

Pakistan currently have a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series after defeating South Africa by seven wickets in the first Test.
