Pathan will be sidelined for the next six weeks
India pace bowler Irfan Pathan has been ruled out of action for the next six weeks after sustaining a rib injury.
Pathan will now be racing against the clock to become fully fit as the Ranji Trophy season begins at the end of the month.
Pathan had also been included in the India A squad for the ongoing limited overs series against West Indies A and he was also named captain of the India Red side for the upcoming Challengers Trophy.
“It was a recent injury, it happened when I was bowling in Bangalore [the venue of India A one-day matches],” Pathan told ESPNcricinfo.
The pace bowler added that the injury would pose no future problems once if fully heals.
“Should be back on the field in around 6 weeks,” Pathan said via Twitter. “I understand a few fans are disappointed, so am I. But don’t worry #faith.”
Pathan’s older half-brother Yusuf will now take over as captain of the India Red side.
The 28-year-old has been injury prone ever since India beat Sri Lanka in an ODI series last July.
Pathan was included in India’s Champions Trophy squad, but failed to get a game.
He then sustained a hamstring injury, which ruled him out of the ODI tri-series tournament that followed.
