Simmons hammered an outstanding 67 to lead the Amazon Warriors to victory

West Indies batsman Lendl Simmons smashed a brilliant 67 and remained unbeaten to power the Guyana Amazon Warriors to victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Carribean Premier League (CPL).

Guyana captain Ramnaresh Sarwan won the toss and chose to bowl first.

The decision looked to be the right one as openers Ahmed Shehzad and Chris Gayle, along with Nkrumah Bonner, were dismissed early on into Jamaica’s innings.

Danza Hyatt made a quickfire 18 to help stabilise the innings, but after his dismissal, the entire batting line-up collapsed, with the exception of wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and David Bernard.

Baugh’s 32 off 30 balls, which included two boundaries and two sixes, and Bernard’s 24 off 23 deliveries, which included two boundaries and one maximum helped the Tallawahs reach 117 before they were bowled out with five balls to spare.

Krishmar Santokie was the pick of the bowlers for Guyana as he picked up three wickets, while Veerasammy Permaul snapped up two wickets and James Franklin and Sunil Narine both chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing a relatively simple target of 118 to win, the Amazon Warriors made an excellent start to their innings as Simmons and New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill put together a partnership of 48 runs at a run rate of 8.22.

However, just as the Amazon Warriors looked to be cruising to victory, Guptill and Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez were dismissed in quick succession.

But, from then on it was all Guyana as Simmons reached his half-century and recorded a 60-run partnership with Sarwan at a blazing run rate of 9.00.

Simmons remained undefeated on 67 off 44 balls, which included five boundaries and four sixes as Guyana managed to reach their target with more than five overs to spare.

Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ended up taking the wickets of Guptill and Hafeez, while none of the other bowlers came remotely close to producing another breakthrough.
