Lloyd has called for Sammy to be reinstated as captain

West Indies legend Clive Lloyd has announced that he is still having a hard time understanding why the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) decided to replace all-rounder Darren Sammy as ODI captain, especially after he led the country to victory at the World Twenty in September last year.

Sammy was made to step down as skipper and Dwayne Bravo was handed the reigns just prior to the start of the Champions Trophy.

Lloyd, who is one of the most successful West Indian captains, stated that Sammy still deserves to be skipper as he has performed well with both bat and ball.

“I don’t have a problem with Dwayne’s (Bravo) captaincy; he is a fine cricketer and can be called upon anytime,” Lloyd said. “But I think Sammy has taken over the responsibility at a difficult time and he has done well since then and deserved a longer try.”

Lloyd also offered a word of advice to the team, stating that their bowling attack needs to be bolstered as the West Indies currently have a tendency to rely on pace spearhead Kemar Roach or spinner Sunil Narine to take a majority of the wickets.

“I strongly believe we have a very good and balanced team but the guys have got to play to the best of their abilities; the bowling’s a little weak, they need to work and try different bowlers,” Lloyd added. “Kemar Roach is an excellent bowler and he should be the one to look at while I think they should try Guyanese fast bowler Ronsford Beaton; he is very impressive.”
