A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy ‘should not be disturbed till the 2019 World Cup’, says Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar has seen a huge change in Dhoni’s captaincy

Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar has announced that Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy “should not be disturbed till the 2019 World Cup”, especially after he led his squad to an outstanding 4-0 whitewash over Australia recently.

Gavaskar noted that he had seen a change in Dhoni’s captaincy during this series compared to the four-Test series against England, in which the English emerged victorious by a margin of 2-1, ending a 28-year losing streak in India.

“He has changed positively as a captain,” Gavaskar told NDTV. “Now, if a player is not attentive and not up to the mark, Dhoni is letting him know.

“He is not making too many gestures but he is making the player know that he is not happy.¬†With the changed leadership approach I think he should not be disturbed till the 2019 World Cup.”

Dhoni has been under heavy criticism ever since India lost against England last year, but the Indian captain has managed to silence his critics with the impressive result against Australia.

“Dhoni has recharged and he is in great batting form, though he needs to tighten up a bit in his wicketkeeping,” Gavaskar said.

Dhoni also became India’s most successful captain, surpassing Sourav Ganguly’s record of 21, after the winning the second Test at Hyderabad.

“Records over a period of time indicate that Dhoni is the ‘winningest’ captain and we should be very happy with that,” Gavaskar added. “There will always be the debate whether Tiger Pataudi is the best-ever captain or is it Ajit Wadekar or Sourav Ganguly. And no one talks about Rahul Dravid who has an outstanding overseas record as skipper.”
