A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Joe Root’s unbelievable amount of success has surprised me immensely, admits Ashley Giles

Root is well on his way to becoming England’s next superstar

England limited overs coach Ashley Giles has announced that he is astounded by the sheer amount of success 22-year-old batsman Joe Root has had this early on in his international career.

However, Root, who plays for Yorkshire in the county league, was just one of many newcomers to make a name for themselves during the recently concluded ODI series against India.

Root’s ruthless streak has carried on into New Zealand, where he has scored two back-to-back unbeaten half-centuries against the Black Caps to take his ODI average to 74.50 from just seven matches.

However, Root’s off-spin bowling has also been a huge surprise to many cricket pundits and former players since a majority of them believed his batting to be his biggest asset, but that has all changed since captain Alastair Cook doesn’t seem as reluctant as he initially was when calling on Root to bowl in the middle overs.

“I didn’t know he could bat as well as he has,” Giles said. “He had all the ingredients to show that he could bat really well. He just looks at home and he’s the sort of player with which English cricket is in good hands.

“Joe’s had a fantastic first tour and has developed game on game into someone who is playing all forms of the game.”

The other player to have made a huge impact throughout the India ODI series was off-spinner James Tredwell, who picked up 11 wickets at an average of 18.18 in the five matches.

Tredwell’s success has given Giles the idea of having him bowl in tandem with fellow off-spinner Graeme Swann across all three formats.

“It just gives us great options – I don’t see at some point why you couldn’t play two offspinners in the same side,” Giles said. “Tredders has been fantastic this trip.”

Despite having lost the ODI series against India 3-2, Giles noted that he had learnt a lot from his maiden series as limited overs coach and hopes to do much better in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, which is currently tied at one apiece.

“Certainly I have learned a lot about this level and as the tour has gone on I have become more and more myself,” he said. “It has been an enjoyable tour, playing cricket in these beautiful arenas, and while we are disappointed to lose, we have learned a lot.”
