Jayawardene has “lost all confidence in dealing with SLC”

Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) Executive Committee have announced that they will be looking into veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene’s comments to UK-based newspaper the Daily Mirror.

According to the article published by the paper, Jayawardene said that he had “lost all confidence in dealing with SLC”.

Earlier last year, Jayawardene had requested the SLC to share out the guarantee fee, made from hosting the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 in September, with the rest of the support staff, groundstaff and pitch curators since they had all worked “closely and tirelessly with the team” throughout the tournament.

However, Jayawardene’s request was denied by the board, who stated that they had made their decision based on not wanting to “deviate from standard practice”.

Details about Jayawardene’s request and the response from the SLC were obtained by the Daily Mirror, who also quoted SLC treasurer Nuski Mohamed’s reasons for denying the request.

The leak of such highly confidential information prompted Jayawardene to write a letter to the Daily Mirror right away.

“As the Captain of the National Team, I am disturbed and deeply disappointed that a confidential document handed over to Sri Lanka Cricket has been published in the Daily Mirror on December 19 causing much concern, embarrassment to players and other staff members,” Jayawardene said in the letter.

Jayawardene revealed that it was a result of the leak that made him lose “all confidence in dealing with SLC in the future”.

After the story was published, SLC immediately released a statement, which stated that the “release of [Jayawardene’s] views through the Manager, direct to the media is a breach of their respective contracts on the part of both the Captain and the Manager and this matter will be taken up for discussion when the Executive Committee next meets.”
