A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Darren Sammy defends out of form Chris Gayle after ODI series loss to Bangladesh

Gayle surprised many people with his dismal performance during the ODI series

After having made a dream start in his return to the West Indies squad, flamboyant opening batsman Chris Gayle seems to be cooling down as he could not even get out of the starting blocks during the national team’s embarrassing 3-2 loss to Bangladesh during their ODI series.

However, West Indies captain Darren Sammy has come to the rescue of Gayle, stating that all batsmen go through good and bad periods and added that he expects the big-hitting opener to bounce back soon.

“I would like to see all my players perform,” Sammy said. “Things don’t always go the way you want them to. Obviously Chris is a very experienced player and I know he will come back good anytime.”

Sammy also credited Bangladesh for being the better team and giving the series some flare after a lot of people expected it to be one way traffic.

“Credit to the Bangladesh team for the way they bowled at him throughout this series,” Sammy added. “They had a plan and they stuck to it. The team doesn’t revolve around one person, it’s a collective set of people to go out there and do what is necessary for us to win.”

The West Indies captain insisted that he does not blame anyone for the loss since “cricket is a team sport”.

“I don’t blame people, I’ve always said that cricket is a team sport,” Sammy said. “We’ve got to pull together as a team. It’s not every day the same people will perform.

“We just need more performances from the team and that would make us more successful.”

But, Sammy admitted that the West Indies’ performance had been well under par throughout the ODI series, especially after dominating the two-Test series.

“The difference between the two teams is that we lost,” Sammy added. “We have not played our best cricket.”
