Gambhir believes it is impossible to compare the two legends
India batsman Gautam Gambhir has announced that Sachin Tendulkar and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting cannot be compared to each other since they play for different countries with almost non-identical conditions.
“They are different people from different countries,” Gambhir said. “No one can force you to give up cricket if you still have the passion to continue playing.”
Gambhir congratulated Ponting on an outstanding 17-year international career and was glad to see him end it on his terms instead of letting the selectors make the tough decision for him.
“He played all his life on his own terms,” Gambhir said. “Now having dominated for so long, he’s going into retirement on his own terms instead of being forced to do so.”
With Ponting having accepted that his outstanding run has come to an end, many cricket pundits are urging Tendulkar to follow the former Australia captain’s example and step aside in order to allow one of the younger talents to show their worth.
However, Gambhir stated that Tendulkar’s presence in the team was a huge morale booster and added that the ‘Little Master’ was a mentor to a lot of the younger players in the side.
“Even when he’s not contributing on the field, he is doing so off it,” Gambhir said. “He’s a mentor. Just his presence in the dressing room is a big thing for Indian cricket.”
