A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: We can continue building on our four consecutive Test victories if we stay consistent, says Darren Sammy

Sammy is hoping the West Indies will be able to extend their win streak to six

West Indies captain Darren Sammy believes that his team can continue building on their four-Test win streak if they keep on playing good consistent cricket.

The last time the West Indies achieved a four-Test win streak was all the way back in 1993 after they defeated Australia and Pakistan.

The streak also makes it the first time the West Indies have won four Test matches in a year since 2002.

Sammy credited his players for their consistency throughout the two-Test series against New Zealand and Bangladesh, both of which they won 2-0, and the West Indies captain truly believes that greater things lie beyond the horizon for his team.

“The most encouraging thing for me is that I turn up and know what to expect from the players, what Tino [Best] or [Veerasammy] Permaul will give me, or what Marlon is going to give when he goes out to bat,” Sammy said. “We have reached that stage. The nucleus of the team is quite settled. The guys are performing consistently in the last 6-12 months.

“The guys in the team were in England and New Zealand, with Chris [Gaye] returning to the team. It’s a more settled squad, just like our T20 team is quite settled, so is our ODI team. The more we play, the more we know about each other. But that being said, we have guys who continue to play domestic cricket at home who perform.”

Sammy noted that his team’s passion, soul and fight were the key reasons they were able to pull off a 2-0 victory against Bangladesh.

“We performed more consistently over the last ten days of Test cricket [than Bangladesh],” Sammy added. “We didn’t take them for granted. In key moments, like the second innings, we did more things better than them.

“They are quite a young team, and once they are mentally stronger they can keep pressing against higher-ranked opposition. We were a team at the same stage, but we have worked on this so it’s good to see performance coming consistently.”

Sammy was also pleased that both the batsmen and bowlers equally contributed to the win, as the batsmen scored seven centuries amongst them, compared to only two by Bangladesh, while the bowling attack were able to take all 20 wickets in both Tests.

“We had to work for most of our wickets,” Sammy said. “The pitch was really good for batting, we stuck to our plans for most of the time. In the first innings in Dhaka, our bowlers didn’t hit the areas. From the second innings and both innings in this Test, we bowled better. Our batsmen were more patient, [they] let the bowlers come to them.”

Early next year, the West Indies will have a chance to extend their winning streak to six when they take on Zimbabwe.

This accomplishment has not been achieved since 1988, when the national team was being led by the one and only Sir Vivian Richards.
