Holland does have a history of shoulder problems

Victoria spin bowler Jon Holland is likely to miss the rest of the season after injuring his shoulder on Wednesday during a club cricket match.

The incident occurred when Holland threw the ball back from the outfield, and he is now scheduled to undergo a shoulder reconstruction.

The timing of Holland’s injury could not have been worse since the Australian summer is about to start, and with the South African team on their way to play a three-Test series, there was a lot debate over whether Holland would get the opportunity to make his international debut.

Holland’s injury all but guarantees off-spinner Nathan Lyon a place in the Test team, but he is still under some pressure to continue building on his excellent streak in the longer format after having taken 42 wickets in 13 Test matches.

The national selectors had also put Holland’s name down for Australia’s back-to-back Ashes series against arch-rivals England next year, but the left-arm spinner will struggle to play any domestic cricket before the start of the series.

Holland has had a history of shoulder problems in the past, whereby he had a similar shoulder reconstruction done in 2010 and also missed the majority of the 2007-2008 season due to shoulder issues as well.

However, Holland still has a long career ahead of him at the age of 25, but having fallen victim to a similar injury will be hard for him to swallow since he was inches away from representing his country.

“It’s disappointing news but I have come back from this before and I believe I still have a lot of good cricket ahead of me, I was hoping that it may have been better news, but it wasn’t to be, so I’ll commence my rehabilitation and I’ll work hard to come back,” Holland said.
