A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Mustafa Kamal named as new ICC vice-president

Kamal will remain as vice-president till 2014

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Mustafa Kamal has been named as the new International Cricket Council (ICC) vice-president and future president.

Kamal’s nomination was jointly made by the BCB and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and was accepted by the ICC’s executive board.

Kamal is set to remain as vice-president from 2012-2014, upon where he will replace Alan Isaac as the president of the ICC from 2014-2015.

With the ICC accepting his nomination, Kamal will now immediately step down as president of the BCB, and the board announced that they are due to have an election sometime in late November.

Kamal was finally given his vice-president seat after a three month delay, where the ICC were debating whether there was any need for a vice-president any more or not.

The ICC, during its annual conference in June, agreed to administrative changes, whereby a chairman post would be created, the president term would only last for one year, and that the vice-presidency would be abolished once Kamal became president.

The ICC announced that they would be electing their first ever chairman after Issac finishes his term as president in 2014, which is when Kamal will be the head figure of the cricket body.

In his bid to become vice-president, it was reported that Kamal made a 15 minute presentation to the current members of the board and outlined his aims and philosophies over the next two years.

Kamal thanked the PCB, BCB, ICC for his successful nomination, but he also had a kind message for the “160 million people of Bangladesh”, saying that this would not have been possible without their continuous support.

The BCB did not reveal who was a likely candidate to replace Kamal as president of the BCB, but a spokesman within the board told ESPNcricinfo that either the government would make the decision, just like they did with Kamal, or it would be up to senior vice-president, Mahbubul Anam, to choose the right candidate.

As of right now, the BCB have sent a proposed amendment to the National Sports Council to be ratified, and if it is, then the next president of the BCB will be elected democratically.

There are two leading candidates for the position so far, the first being Saber Hossain Chowdhury, who is a former BCB president, and the other being Nazmul Hasan, who is the son of the country’s president Zillur Rahman and also the chairman of Abahani Cricket, who are one of the biggest cricket clubs in all of Bangladesh.
