Sri Lanka’s 18-year-old wildcard spinner Akila Dananjaya is still recovering from a fractured cheekbone he suffered at the hands of New Zealand batsman Rob Nicol.
Dananjaya was hit after Nicol powerfully drove the ball back to the 18-year-old, who failed to take the catch as the ball slipped straight through his hands and struck him on the left side of his face.
Sri Lanka team media manager Rajitha Fernando said: “X-rays and MRI scans reveal a fracture on his left cheek bone, Akila is in pain and is on antibiotics at the moment. The left side of his face is swollen and he has difficulty opening his mouth. He is on a liquid diet.”
Despite being hit early into his overs, Dananjaya contined on bowling and finished with two wickets in the match.
Dananjaya returned for the super 8s match against England, but missed the semi-final against Pakistan before making another comeback in the final against the West Indies.
