Pattinson has been recovering from injury for the past few months
Young Australian pace bowler James Pattinson may see his preparation for the upcoming Test series against South Africa disrupted due to the Champions League Twenty20, whereby he may be called up to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders, even though he did not play a single game with them in this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
If Pattinson is called up to play in the Champions League Twenty20, he will miss two out of the four Sheffield Shield games that take place before the start of the first Test in Brisbane on November 9.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Pattinson stated that playing in the Champions League would be “a tough obstacle, but you’ve got to manage it”.
Cricket Australia noted that even though some of their players will be participating in the Twenty20 tournament, they still had a plan to ensure that none of the national team players missed out on any preparation for the South Africa series.
“I will be definitely right for the first Shield game, there’s a bit of concern over the Champions League. I’m with Kolkata so if they want me I will have to go and play Champions League in South Africa. There’s been a lot of discussion about it, around the workloads and stuff like that. It’s not an ideal situation but, then again, it is what it is and we have to deal with it,” Pattinson said.
Cricket Australia will no doubt be worried about their players though since they cannot predict whether any of them may fall victim to a freak injury.
Furthermore, Cricket Australia will also be worried about when their players return from South Africa, where the Champions League Twenty20 is being held, to Australia since they do not want a repeat of what happened two years ago when batsman Michael Hussey and pace bowler Doug Bollinger arrived late for a Test series in India.
