A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Harbhajan Singh looking forward to fresh start with India

Singh is looking to prove that he can still be as dangerous of a bowler as he was earlier in his career

India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been a key player for the national team for a long time, but for the past year, he has not played any international cricket due to injuries and inconsistency.

But, after earning a recall for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20, he is looking forward to making a fresh start with the team and stated that he will not live in the past, where he proved to be very deceptive bowler.

Speaking exclusively to PTI, Singh said: “It’s always tough when you are out, making a comeback is tougher than earning your maiden international call. It involves a lot of things. When you’re out, you get injured and then again out. It’s always been challenging. You cannot live in the past glory. For anyone, it does not depend what you’ve done in the past but what you do in the present and future.”

Singh last represented India in August 2011 against England at Trent Bridge, and after going through a rough period in the Indian Premier League (IPL) regarding his form with the ball and sustaining a number of injuries, Singh ended up playing county cricket with Essex.

Singh stated that his time with Essex really allowed him to find his feet and confidence, which he believes is the reason why he was recalled into the national team.

“I won’t say it was frustrating but at times it’s difficult not being part of the side for so long. But you’re used to the set up. Not only me, it can happen to anyone. You are always going to have ups and downs. But when you get the opportunity, you have to stand up and take it in your stride,” Singh said.

Singh has already put up an excellent bowling performance in the ICC World Twenty20, taking four wickets against England in the group stages.

“I had the willpower and the desire to wear the India jersey again – it’s the biggest thing for me. It makes me proud, it’s not that I was dropped for the first time last year. But it has been for the longest period of time. It makes you feel as if you are doing it for the first time. I was ready to work hard and take challenge. You get your family and friends’ support, but at the end of the day you’re all alone fighting it out there in the middle. With Almighty’s help, I’m here again and now I’m looking forward towards doing well,” Singh added.
