Bond was one the best pace bowlers New Zealand ever produced

Former New Zealand pace bowler Shane Bond has revealed that he is keen on becoming the next bowling coach for the national team.

Current New Zealand bowling coach Damien Wright announced that he will be stepping down from the position after the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 later this month in Sri Lanka in order to spend more time with his family.

Speaking exclusively to Fairfax NZ News, Bond said: “There’s not much else to say really, until I see a job description.”

Bond has already captured the attention of New Zealand Cricket director John Buchanan, who stated that the board would further discuss the matter.

“We’ll go through the advertising process, we’re aware that Damien Wright has to move on so we’ll go through that process, but obviously someone like Shane Bond presents [himself] as one of the candidates that we’re very interested in talking with,” Buchanan said.

Wright was appointed as bowling coach after he retired from Australian first-class cricket, and spent 13 months working on and developing the New Zealand bowling attack.

“We are very disappointed to lose a quality coach like Damien but can totally understand his reasons for having to step away from the job,” Buchanan added.

Bond, who took 87 wickets in just 18 Test matches for New Zealand, has recently been working closely with New Zealand Cricket and the Central Districts team as a bowling coach.

Bond has also worked on the bowling techniques of current New Zealand pace bowlers Doug Bracewell and Adam Milne.
