Al Hasan knows he will have to undergo surgery sometime within the 2012-2013 season

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has announced that he has still not made a decision about whether to undergo surgery on his left knee or not.

Last month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) declined Al Hasan the chance to play in the Sri Lanka Premier League in order to ensure that he does not aggravate the injury even more.

Speaking exclusively to Prothom Alo, a daily Bangladesh newspaper, Al Hasan said: “The problem (in my left knee) won’t be fixed without an operation. But I haven’t decided when it will be, it may be after the World Cup (T20) but if it means that I will miss the West Indies series, I will do it afterwards.”

Al Hasan has been included in the Bangladesh squad that is scheduled to play three Twenty20 Internationals in Trinidad and Tobago before heading off to Sri Lanka for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20.

He is also set to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders during the Champions League Twenty20, which starts on October 13, and after the tournament is concluded Al Hasan will have to gear up for a home series against the West Indies in mid-November.

Al Hasan will also have to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, followed by series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, along with the Indian Premier League (IPL) to round things off.

The BCB doctor, Dr Debashish Chowdhury has revealed that Al Hasan has been diagnosed with a degenerated meniscus, and said: “The latest MRI suggests that he is suffering degenerated meniscus. Usually it is caused due to impact, but in Shakib’s case it is due to overuse. He’s a spinner so the knee has to twist that way.”
