De Villiers believes the South African bowlers will be the key to defeating England in the ODI series
South Africa batsman and temporary wicketkeeper AB de Villiers expects the Proteas bowling attack to expose the lack of depth in England’s batting lineup throughout the ODI series.
England are currently atop the team rankings for ODIs, but if South Africa manage to defeat them and win the series, then the Proteas will be crowned as the new number one ODI team.
England recently embarrassed their arch-rivals Australia 4-0 in a recent ODI series, and are hoping to do the same after they were humiliated by South Africa during the Test series, which saw England lose their number one Test team ranking to the Proteas.
De Villiers believes that the South African bowlers have the ability to take England down a notch and remove them from the top spot in the rankings.
“I think they are a little bit light in the batting department, that might be something that we will be attacking. We’ll see. They’ve got Bresnan that I think they rely on quite a bit coming in at seven,” de Villiers said.
However, de Villiers is not expecting England to go down without a fight, and with a roster full of excellent talents, the South African wicketkeeper batsman has urged his team not to be overconfident after winning the recent Test series.
“The reason why they’re playing conservatively up front is because they’re a batter light. They don’t go with the wicketkeeper at seven like most teams do. But I don’t think they’ve got a set blueprint. They can play around with options and they’ve got a wonderful ODI side,” de Villiers added.
Even after replacing England at the top of the Test team rankings, de Villiers denied claims that South Africa’s main aim was to dethrone England as the number one ODI team as well.
De Villiers stated that instead of replacing England at the top of the ODI team rankings, he is more concerned with developing a new-look side for the future.
