Pietersen’s text messages have further weakened his relationship amongst the team
England Test captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower are reportedly furious at batsman Kevin Pietersen after he sent text messages to South African players during the second Test match at Headingley.
The text messages, which were sent to South African pace bowler Dale Steyn and wicketkeeper AB de Villiers allegedly contained “less than flattering comments” about Strauss and some of Pietersen’s other England team-mates.
With Pietersen’s relationship already being frosty with most of his England team-mates, many cricket pundits see this scandal as a move that could further damage relations between Pietersen and the team.
In an attempt to play down the matter, South Africa manager Mohammed Moosajee told the Daily Mail: “I can confirm that text messages were sent but they contained friendly banter between guys who have played with each other in the past.”
Steyn previously played with Pietersen in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, while this year, de Villiers played with Pietersen for the Delhi Daredevils.
Even though both South African players have been team-mates with Pietersen in the past, they admitted that they were extremely embarrassed over contacting each other throughout the second Test match.
Pietersen further angered his England team-mates after mingling with the South African players when both teams were warming up for the start of the match.
