Ganguly believes Gambhir is the future of Indian cricket
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has announced that Gautam Gambhir’s amazing performance during the Indian Premier League (IPL) will give selectors an option when the time comes to appoint a new captain for the India Test squad.
Gambhir, captained his IPL side, the Kolkata Knight Riders, to their first title win ever in the tournament’s history.
“As I’ve always said, there would be a question mark over Dhoni as a Test player. But Gambhir is an obvious choice in the Test format. (With the win) Gambhir obviously gives an option to the selectors. It’s a 20 per cent chance though,” Ganguly said.
Ganguly, refused to compare Gambhir with current captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but he did mention that Dhoni was unbeatable in the ODI and Twenty20 format due to his cool nature.
Ganguly, also noted that Dhoni’s statistics speaks for itself, especially when he led India to the World T20 title and then the 2011 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup.
“His success for his franchise (CSK) is also commendable with two IPL titles and the Champions League T20. Overall, Dhoni is the best captain in the shorter versions. Gambhir is only captain of this year’s IPL winning team (Kolkata Knight Riders). So I feel the time has not come to compare Gambhir with Dhoni as far as captaincy is concerned,” Ganguly said.
Ganguly, who is head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) technical committee, noted that there is some thought of reshuffling the team, especially with the England and Australia series approaching.
Gambhir, was originally the vice-captain of the Indian team, but the BCCI have stripped him of the position and given it to his teammate Virat Kohli.
