Virender Sehwag scored a record-breaking 219

Virender Sehwag broke the record for the highest individual score in an ODI as his 219 helped India demolish the West Indies by 153 runs.

Sehwag took the record from previous holder and teammate, Sachin Tendulkar, who made 200 not out in 2010.

Captain and man of the match, Sehwag said: “I was cheering for Sachin when he got his double-hundred and it’s great to emulate that and break his record.”

Sehwag, who was dropped on 170 by West Indian Captain Darren Sammy, hit 25 fours and seven sixes, while also setting India’s highest ODI total in history of 418-5.

The opener was finally dismissed in the 47th over when he was caught by substitute fieldsman Anthony Martin, from the bowling of Keiron Pollard.

By the time Indian innings was over, every West Indian bowler had felt the wrath of Sehwag, with every bowlers’ economy rate at over seven.

Sehwag and other opener Gautham Gambhir, who scored 67, put on a first wicket partnership of 176. Suresh Raina, added a well played 55.

West Indian Captain Darren Sammy said: “We bowled some good balls but he played better shots.”

West Indies, set a mammoth total of 419 to win, never looked like conquering the target as regular wickets by the Indian bowlers ensured that none of the batsmen went on to make high scores.

Indian debutant, Rahul Sharma took three West Indian wickets, and was backed up by Ravindra Jadeja who also claimed three wickets.

Sehwag said: “Rahul Sharma is a good prospect because he bowls at around 90kph and if it stops and turns then it becomes hard for the batsman.”

West Indian wicketkeeper, Dinesh Ramdin provided the only spark for the West Indian, making 96 before being caught off the final ball of the innings.

India claimed the ODI series with this win as they go 3-1 up in the series with only one match remaining in Chennai on the 11th of December.
