Despite a magnificent 153 from India captain Virat Kohli, South Africa batsman AB de Villiers stretched his side’s lead to 118 before bad light ended play early on the third day in Centurion.
Starting off the day on 183/5, India managed to add 26 runs to their overnight score before some lackadaisical running from Hardik Pandya led to him being run out by Vernon Philander for 15.
Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin made up for the loss of Pandya with a 71-run partnership, during which Kohli brought up his hundred, before Ashwin was caught by South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis at second slip off the bowling of Vernon Philander for 38.

Mohammed Shami fell the very next over as he was caught by Hashim Amla at first slip off the bowling of Morne Morkel for one run.
Ishant Sharma only made three runs before he was caught by Aiden Markram at short leg off the bowling of Morkel.
India ended up being bowled out for 307, which gave South Africa a 28-run lead, when Kohli was caught by De Villiers at long-on off the bowling of Morkel for 153, which came off 217 balls and included 15 boundaries.
Morkel was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada and debutant Lungi Ngidi chipped in with one wicket apiece.
With a 28-run lead in hand, the Proteas made an awful start to their second innings as Markram was given out lbw off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah for one run.
Hashim Amla was trudging back to the pavilion four overs later as he suffered the same fate as Markram.
De Villiers and Dean Elgar rescued South Africa with an unbeaten 65-run stand before the rain came.
After about an hour, play resumed and the duo pushed their partnership to 87 runs before bad light brought play to an end for the day.
De Villiers finished on 50 off 78 balls, which included six boundaries, while Elgar remained undefeated on 36 off 78 deliveries, which included four boundaries and a six.
Bumrah was the only bowler to take any wickets.
South Africa ended day three on 90/2 and will continue batting on Tuesday at 10:00 local time or 08:00 GMT.
