Former wicketkeeper-batsman Rashid Latif has said he would have preferred to see spin-bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan appointed Pakistan’s T20I captain instead of Salman Ali Agha.

Shadab brings plenty of leadership experience, having captained Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for quite some time.

Although the 27-year-old has not been at his best in the shortest format recently, Latif maintained that he was still the best candidate for the leadership role.

“Shadab Khan should have been the one to get the T20 captaincy; his recent performance hasn’t been good, however Shadab has the ability to perform,” he was quoted as saying by journalist Arfa Feroz Zake on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Both Shadab and Salman are currently in action in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where Pakistan are unbeaten are winning their first two games against the Netherlands and United States of America.

Shadab has taken two wickets at an average of 26 and a strike-rate of 6.50, while also scoring 38 runs at an average of 19 and a strike-rate of 158.33.

As for Salman, he has accumulated 13 runs at an average of 6.50 and a strike-rate of 118.18.

Pakistan’s next match will be against India on February 15 in Colombo.
