Former Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie has urged the national selectors to keep giving chances to spinner Sufiyan Muqeem as he is “a very talented cricketer”.
Gillespie noted that if Muqeem continues being backed, he “can be a great servant for Pakistan cricket”.
The 25-year-old has received sporadic chances at the international level, but has made the most of his opportunities every time.
Overall, he has claimed 19 wickets in 11 T20Is at an average of 11.15 and an economy rate of 5.94.
“Sufiyan Muqeem is a very talented cricketer who, if given the right opportunities, can be a great servant for Pakistan cricket. Already in his short international career, he has shown that he has the skills and temperament to play at the highest level,” Gillespie was quoted as saying by Geo Super.
During the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL), Muqeem wasn’t at his best as he only picked up one wicket in three matches for the Peshawar Zalmi at an average of 107 and an economy rate of 9.72.
After PSL 10, he didn’t feature in Pakistan’s three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in Lahore.
He also missed the tour of Bangladesh, where the men in green lost the T20I series 2-1.
Muqeem ended up making his comeback in the ongoing tour of the West Indies, which consists of three T20Is and three ODIs.
In the 1st T20I, he finished with figures of 1-20 off his four overs as Pakistan won by 14 runs.
The 2nd T20I will take place on August 3 in Lauderhill.
